Their critical role in nature is yet another advantage to raising bison on your farm or ranch. <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalbison.org\/the-bison-advantage\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"41731\">Click here<\/a> to learn more about the Bison Advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Bison care for and heal Mother Nature in a variety of ways:<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grazing stimulates new plant growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grazing certain plants, and leaving others, keep the North American prairie in balance and builds plant diversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manure and urine provide the soil with vital nutrients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hoof action stirs the soil and buries seeds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wallows create depressions that capture rainfall and create habitat for insects, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthy grasslands created by bison help capture carbon from the atmosphere and return it to the soil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthy grasslands are more drought resistant because the different depths of their roots access water in different areas of the soil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bison\u2019s positive impact helped shaped our land and ecosystem.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bison, North America\u2019s largest land mammal, once roamed the continent freely, helping sustain plains and prairie ecosystems as a keystone species through grazing, fertilization, trampling and other natural behavior. Bison shaped the vegetation and landscape as they fed on and dispersed the seeds of grasses, sedges, and forbs. Several bird species adapted to or co-evolved with the types of grasses and vegetation structures that had been, for millennia, grazed by millions of free-ranging bison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This natural behavior is today mimicked by bison stewards, and other livestock producers, seeking to regenerate their soil in part by utilizing the bison\u2019s instincts, which remain intact as bison were never domesticated. Not only does proper management allow for the regeneration of healthy, productive soils and grasslands, it is also a major source of carbon sequestration. As climate change impacts and reduces our native grasslands, regenerative pastures are proving to be important and sustainable carbon sinks.
